No Stinkin’ Stinkwort! CRC Helps Local Plants Thrive at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands

CRC recently partnered with the Bolsa Chica Conservancy to remove Stinkwort, an invasive and non-native plant species, from the Bolsa Chica Wetlands in Huntington Beach. Removing the invasive plant species prevents them from establishing roots and spreading, and maintains the delicate balance of the Bolsa ecosystem.

Stinkwort has a light, fluffy seed that is easily released upon touch or from a breeze. It also has a distinct smell and bitter taste that deters wildlife from feeding on it. The plant spreads rapidly and takes up space normally inhabited by native plants, which reduces the amount of plant life available for native animal species to eat.

A dozen CRC volunteers, along with 20 Conservancy volunteers from California State University, Long Beach, worked to remove over 250 plants from the location.

Kristi Monji, CRC Senior Healthy, Safety and Environmental Advisor, thoughtfully shared, “It means a lot to me that CRC employees are here today cleaning up and giving back. It’s a tangible demonstration of our commitment to the community”.
